Pop Wannabe Winner sets sights on the X Factor

Student pop star Emma Wright has got stars in her eyes after she was named Blackpool Sixth Form's top of the pops at the annual Pop Wannabe competition.

Emma Wright's show-stopping version of Christina Aguilera's Ain't No Other Man saw her storming into first place to lift the coveted Pop Wannabe crown with the nine other acts performing songs from Daniel Merryweather, The Fugees, Jamiroquai, Duffy and Charlotte Church.

She now has her sights set on the X Factor – and music mogul judge Cowell – when she auditions for the hit TV show next month. Emma, 18, said: "I'm so happy to have won, I didn't think I would so it's given me massive confidence boost.

"I leave college this year so I'm really happy to be going out on such a high."

The competition was judged by Ian Carten, Head of Performing Arts, Principal Felicity Greaves, The Gazette's news editor Jon Rhodes and former Radio Wave breakfast show presenter Gemma Barron.

Emma, a former pupil of Highfield Humanities College, beat strong competition from the 10 finalists, pipping Jack Wealthall, who wowed the crowd with his performance of Daniel Merryweather's Red, and Zoe Swindells' version of The Fugee's Killing Me Softly.

Currently studying the BTEC National Certificate in Music and A Level English Literature, Emma is also a member of the Scream Theatre School. She added: "The competition was really close and I thought Josh Brent, who sang Jamiroquai, would win as he really got the crowd going. So much hard work went into the competition, the support of the staff and students was amazing."

Ian Carten said, "We've been running Pop Wannabe for three years, but this year's final was the closest fought as the standard was so high. We had about 40 students enter and cutting them down to 10 was really tough. Everyone did well but Emma was a really worthy winner, she had great stage presence and the song was a real hit. If I had a record label I'd sign her up myself."
