Six students from The Blackpool Sixth Form College have achieved success in the national Mathematics Senior Challenge with 2 students achieving fantastic gold awards.
Senior student Gordon Pal and Alasdair Preston both achieved gold awards, Robert Harrison and Tom Taylor achieved silver awards and Claire Sycamore and Fuad Chowdhury achived bronze awards.
The Senior Mathematics Challenge, run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, is aimed at all 16-19 year olds studying mathematics in year 13 and below. The challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes and is sat in college under normal exam conditions.
The top 40% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate with only 6% of these receiving the gold certificate.
Gordon Pal, 17, stated, "This was a fantastic platform for me to exercise my mathematical skills and I look forward to studying maths at university."
Alasdair Preston, 17, commented, "Entering the Maths Challenge provided an excellent chance to tackle difficult problems and I have enjoyed the success of achieving the gold award."
Robert Harrison, 18, said, "I am really pleased with my achievement and I feel that it has helped open my mind to a wider range of mathematical problems."
Emma Case, Head of Mathematics at The Blackpool Sixth Form College, added, "To have six students achieve awards from the competition is fantastic and I would like to congratulate them for all their hard work."
