Chris Powers is a former student of Montgomery High School and is a part of the first group of students to study the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Blackpool Sixth. Chris has just received confirmation of a place to study History at the University of Cambridge.
We asked Chris to tell us about how he has enjoyed studying the IB. His response is below:
"Hi, I'm Chris and I am in the second year of the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Blackpool Sixth.
On the IB I study History, Psychology, English Literature, Maths, Biology and French. That’s 6 subjects and in addition to this I have studied Theory of Knowledge, a key element of the IB Diploma where we look at all the different subject types and how they combine and what we learn from them. As an IB student we also do the Extended Essay, a 4000 word essay on something of our own choice, mine is on History as this is the subject I want to do at University.
Just when you think that’s quite a lot of work we also have to complete 150 CAS Hours. CAS stands for Creativity, Action, Service and is really rewarding for us as we get to help the community, do sports (I do a lot of cycling!) and we also do creative things like blogging or playing music.
The IB is a lot of work but unlike A levels, we only have one set of exams at the end of the two years and the education is a lot broader. It’s perfect if you’re unsure of what you want to do, or if you just like everything!
Thanks to the IB I feel like I understand the world a lot better and it will give me an advantage in the job market. I believe that it is responsible for my recent offer to study History at Cambridge, (the best university in the world on some rankings!), as it makes me stand out from everybody else.
If you want a course which is a bit of everything then do something clever, do the IB!"
